A Gathering of Great Gerold

Gerold Porzellan seems to have been forgotten.  People remember Meissen Porcelain, and perhaps have seen porcelain dolls, but you would never know that Gerold Porzellan was a German company which was in business for years and produced more than 12,000 products.

As we have collected more and more Gerold porzellan pieces their "look" begins to stand out. However, the porcelain factories of Europe had constant movement of artists from one company to another. In additon, the companies obviously watched each others sales. So if some style of product was a success for one, the others would quickly copy it. It makes for interesting times when trying to decide what something is from a bad picture on Ebay.

Porcelain marks are very important in the identification of any porcelain product, but as much as we can tell there has not been any systematic analysis of Gerold Porzellan marks.  We have been looking for a pattern in the numbering marks, but have yet to figure out what it is.

We bought most of our porcelain figurines on Ebay.  We got some deals, but, unfortunately, we also got a lot of material to use for practice with porcelain repair.  Sellers frequently fail to pack well and some of them seem to have vision problems.  The defects seem obvious to me.

Our prize find is an original copy of a 1958 Gerold Porzellan catalog. We have copied its contents and think you will find it very helpful for identification of old Gerold pieces.

If you are interested in Gerold Porzellan you might also find Hutschenreuther porzellan attractive. We have published a 1927 Hutschenreuther catalog.
